Welcome to Orkney Unlimited
The Orkney Islands, a breathtaking archipelago just a short hop across the Pentland Firth from the north coast of Scotland, are made up of over 70 islands. Only the largest and most fertile islands are inhabited, with a population of approximately 23,000 people.
Orkney’s history is as rich as its landscapes. Classic literature from 325 BC mentions the islands, but archaeological evidence shows that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers lived here over 9,000 years ago. A thousand years ago, Orkney was at the heart of a vast Viking network that dominated the Northern Atlantic, both politically and culturally.
Today, Orkney is a treasure trove of history, where the layers of the past and present are found in abundance like nowhere else in the United Kingdom.
